Layout and design determine the physical appearance of the book.

​

You need to consider the size of the book, the typeface or typefaces you wish to use, the placing and presentation of any illustrations and the overall feel and character of the book.

 

There are a number of standard book sizes. Some of these sizes are considered particularly appropriate for certain genres of book.

 

For example:

6" x 9" (152mm x 229mm) is a popular choice for novels, memoirs and text books.

5.25" x 8" (133mm x 203mm) is a popular choice for self development books.

8" x 10" (203mm x 254mm) is a popular size for scientific text books. 

              (In hardback, this is also a popular size for children's books)
